Earle Rupert Winnie, Jr. 1919-2012.   Earle R. Winnie, Jr. passed away on August 18, 2012 in Pinehurst, NC. He was born in his grandmother’s house in Baltimore, MD to Vesta and Earl Winnie on October 4, 1919. He is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend by many. He was wise, intelligent, brave, meticulous, hardworking, caring, and had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nell Crismond Winnie of Southern Pines, NC, daughter, Denise Drawbaugh and husband Ron Drawbaugh of Raleigh, NC, daughter Jan Keady and husband Ret. Col. Kevin Keady of Laconia, NH, and grandsons Benjamin Brust of Edinborough, Scotland, Jeffrey Brust and wife Jessica Gray Brust of Alexandria, VA, Kyle Shannon and wife Lindsay Jamison Shannon of Raleigh, NC, sister Vesta Higgins of Glen Riddle, PA, and three nieces, Johannah, Arden, and Kim of Glen Riddle, PA.

During World War II, Earle Rupert Winnie, Jr. served in the Army as a military police officer, intelligence officer, and in the Phillipine Islands. In April 1948, Earle re-entered the Army and attended the Counterintelligence School and the Army Language School. He served as an intelligence officer for three and a half years in Frankfurt/Main, Germany until 1953. He was also a terminal manager for the Arkansas Motor Freight Lines in Pine Bluff, Arkansas for a year before entering into  federal civil service in 1954, where he retired in 1975. Earle retired from the Army Reserve as a Lt. Col. In 1970. After retirement, he lived in Williamsburg, VA, Fredericksburg, VA, and moved to Southern Pines, NC in 1984. While residing in Knollwood Village, Earle served as President of the Homeowners’ Association and the Men’s Golf Association.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with a full military burial at a later date.

Earle was a member since 1984 of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church where he seldom missed a Sunday service. In lieu of Flowers, Donations may be made in his honor to Brownson Memorial Church, 330 S. May St. Southern Pines, NC 28387
