Joe “Jim” Milton Markland, Jr.

Joe “Jim” Milton Markland, Jr., 87, of Southern Pines, passed away on August 17, 2012 at Pinelake Heath and Rehabilitation.

He was born on January 26, 1925 in Winston Salem to the late Joe Sr. and Fannie Markland.

A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Salem Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem, NC.

Mr. Markland attended Pine Chapel Moravian Church in Old Salem.  He was a US Army Veteran who served in the Northern France Campaign, Rhineland Campaign and Normandy Campaig in which he received the RAMET Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.  After his discharge from the Army he went on to work for many years at the Forsyth County Health Department.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Markland was preceded in death by his wife Christine Alease Markland; two sisters, Beatrice Everhart and her husband Koyt, Mildred Martin and her husband Purdum; one brother, Jack Markland and his wife Barbara; one sister-in-law Juantine Hepler and her husband David.

He is survived by one sister-in-law Lois Merritt and her husband Lawrence and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Pine Chapel Moravian Church at 324 Goldfloss Street Winston Salem, NC 27127.
