Obituary for Robert B. Lytle

Robert B. Lytle, DDS, 97, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Pinehurst, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2012.
A graveside service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Greenwood Cemetery, in York, Neb.
Dr. Lytle was born July 6, 1915, on a farm near York, Neb. He was the son of the late Charles and Lillie (King) Lytle. Dr. Lytle received a degree from University of Nebraska College of Dentistry in 1939. Following two years of private practice in Osceola, Neb., Bob joined the Navy in 1941. He served on the hospital ship Samaritan during World War II. Included in his Navy career was a seven-year tour of duty teaching prosthodontics at the Naval Dental School in Bethesda, Md. Bob retired from the Navy with a rank of captain in 1963.
After his retirement from the Navy, Bob taught prosthodontics at Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, D.C., from 1963 to 1983, where he was appointed professor emeritus. He continued a private prosthodontic practice in Washington until June 1999, 60 years after he graduated from dental school.
During his years at Georgetown, Bob and his wife, Phyl, were avid sailors on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1999, Bob and Phyl retired to Pinehurst.
In North Carolina, Bob especially enjoyed being near six of his great-grandchildren and the visits of the six great-grandchildren who traveled from the West and East Coast. Bob and Phyl moved to Lincoln in September 2011.
Bob is survived by his wife of 73 years, Phyllis (Alfred) Lytle, of Lincoln; daughter Susan Boswell and son-in-law Richard, of Lincoln; daughter-in-law Mina Lytle, of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter-in-law Ruth Lytle, of Port Townsend, Wash.; son-in-law Oscar Graham (Pete) Gulley, of Southern Pines; grandchildren Jeff (Diane) Boswell, Kathy (Kirk) Godtfredsen, Beverly (Mark) Coose, Charles Lytle, Amy (Randy) Steele, Graham (Angel) Gulley, Paul Lytle, Megan (Chris) Hunt, Dennis Lytle and Robert J. Lytle; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his children James Lytle, Robert B. Lytle and Linda Gulley; sister Mildred Schnasse; and brother Charles Lytle.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or University of Nebraska College of Dentistry in Lincoln.
