Matthew Haywood Mills, 73, of Southern Pines, died suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.
A visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Boles Funeral Home, in Southern Pines. A graveside service will follow at 1:15 p.m., at Bethesda Cemetery, in Aberdeen, with pastor Randy Thornton officiating.
Matthew was the longtime owner of Matthew Mills Plumbing. He was the first of eight children of the late Mayor Eutice Mills, and Virginia (Butner) Mills.
Matthew was a U.S. Army veteran and always had stories to tell about that, as well as the other places he had lived far and wide, or had visited. He was quite gregarious, and a natural dancer.
As a “senior superlative” at Aberdeen High, he was voted “Best-All-Around.”
He enjoyed visiting family and making his evening rounds and chatting with people. He loved his fast cars, and all sports and politics. He was someone never to be challenged on dates and scores, because his memory was like a steel trap.
Mr. Mills is survived by three brothers, John Mills, of Pinebluff, Arthur Mills, of Raleigh, and Jeff Mills (Jane), of Aberdeen; four sisters, Marilyn Bridgeman (Melton), of Southern Pines, Priscilla Abbitt (William), of Richmond, Va., Sarah Thornton (Randy), of Pinehurst, and Maggie Thompson (Brad), of Fuquay-Varina; seven nieces and nine nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pinebluff United Methodist Church, 275 E. Philadelphia Ave., Pinebluff, NC 28373.
Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.
