William “Bill” Kenneth Allen, 80, of Aberdeen, passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at High Point Regional Hospital, in High Point.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Eagle Springs Baptist Church, 460 Eagle Springs Road, Eagle Springs, NC 27242. Family will receive friends in the church immediately following the service.
Mr. Allen was retired from the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad in Aberdeen. He served as agent-trainmaster for the railroad for 30 years. He had previously worked for the North Carolina Highway Department, Road Oil Division.
Bill was born in Tar Heel, in Bladen County, and graduated from Tar Heel High School, and received his associate’s degree in business from Sandhills Community College. Bill was a longtime member of Ashley Heights Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, and choir member. He also loved attending Eagle Springs Baptist Church with his wife’s family. He was also a past master of Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge No. 550 in Aberdeen.
After retiring, Bill and his wife, Carolyn, ministered to Kingswood Nursing Home residents in Aberdeen through music and song for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 411⁄2 years, Carolyn Thomas Allen, of the home; stepson, the Rev. Chan Shaver (and his wife, Kim), of Jamestown; grandchildren, Paul Kenneth Shaver and Ashley Caroline Shaver, of Jamestown; sister, Juanita Allen Phillips (and her husband, Preston), of Lumberton; mother-in-law, Irene Britt Thomas, of Jackson Springs; in-laws, Joe Hanford (and wife, Annette) Thomas, of High Point, Dayle (and husband, Larry) Pusser, of Eagle Springs; beloved nieces and nephews; and special caregiver John Melville. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Betty Speedy Allen; sister Katherine; and brother Jim.
