Michael G. Connelly, 80, of Southern Pines, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, with his family by his side.
A memorial service in his honor will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst.
Mr. Connelly was born in 1932, in Buffalo, N.Y., to William M. Connelly and Dolores Zimmermann, the eldest of four children. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, Kenmore, N.Y., and from Canisius College, Buffalo, with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Following college, Mike served in Korea for two years in the U.S. Army, on the front line, rising to infantry company commander, and honorably discharged holding the rank of captain.
Following his honorable discharge, he was employed by American Airlines in their New York City headquarters, beginning in their management candidate program and ultimately serving as director of fuel purchasing.
He then joined Conover Mast Publishing, holding the position of New York City district manager, followed by appointment as director of sales and marketing for Medical Communications Inc., also in New York City.
Upon leaving New York City, Mike became vice president at Computer Search Inc., Amherst, N.Y., and ended his business career as midwest regional manager for McGraw-Hill Publications based in Chicago. During this time he was active in the Business Press Advertisers Association, president of the Industrial Advertising Sales Club of Cleveland, Ohio, as well as president of the Industrial Advertising Sales Club of Chicago.
He held memberships in the Press Clubs of Cleveland, New York City, Pittsburgh and Chicago. He also chaired the Membership Committee of The Royal Ridge Field Club of Pittsburgh, served as president of Regent Park Home Owners Association, Arlington Heights, Ill., and vice president of the Ancient Tree Home Owners Association, Northbrook, Ill., and served as president of the Parent’s Association Ohio Beta Chapter Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
He and his wife, Barbara, retired to Pinehurst in 1992 and belonged to the Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, as well as to the Golf and Country Club of Longleaf in Southern Pines, and most recently resided at Penick Village in Southern Pines.
During his lifetime he was active in numerous civic and political organizations, including the Membership Committee of The Moore County Republican Men’s Club. His hobbies included golf, tennis, and photography.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara, of Southern Pines; eight children, Cari Fultz, Megan (John) Swanson and Tim (Linda) Connelly, all of Hamburg, N.Y., Ann (John) Mertz, of Libertyville, Ill., Patrick (Michelle) Connelly, of East Haddam, Conn., William (Jennifer) Connelly, of Marvin, Jan and Bill Bright of Waukesha, Wis., and Barbara and Charles Rigdon, of Huntington Beach, Calif.;19 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his sister Ann (Fred) Scherer, of Kenmore, N.Y.; brother, Kevin (Judy) Connelly, of Pinehurst, and brother-in-law Frank Downing, of Orchard Park, N.Y. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Dolores (Frank) Downing, of Orchard Park.
