Edwin “Yates” Bailey, 91, of Southern Pines, and a former resident of Morganton for many years, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at North Morganton Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Baker officiating. Burial followed at Burke Memorial Park. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sossoman Funeral Home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Cleveland County, and was a son of the late Benjamin and Florence Cooper Bailey. He was retired from Great Lakes Carbon Corporation. Mr. Bailey was an avid hunter and fisherman, former little league baseball coach, and a fan of the former Morganton High School football team. He was an active member of North Morganton Baptist Church for 30 years and was voted Man of the Year.
Yates is survived by his wife, Katherine Bridges Bailey, of the home; sons, Roger Edwin Bailey and wife, Camille, of Pinehurst, and Dennis Bailey and wife, Sherry, of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Philip, Kelty, Rich, Will and Skat Bailey; and great-grandson, Austin Bailey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Forest, Clarence, Everette, Byron, and Gaston Bailey; and sisters, Gladys Harris and Ester Fraser.
