Margaret Lucinda (“Cindy”) Sloan Davis died unto her Lord Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at her home in Pinehurst, surrounded by her family and dearly loved ones.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at First Baptist Church, Southern Pines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Roland Sloan Jr. and Virginia Gadd Sloan; and her sister Virginia (“Missy”) Russell Sloan.
Born in Charlotte in 1952, Cindy was a native of North Carolina. She graduated from Cary High School in 1970, and Western Carolina University in 1974 with a B.S. degree in home economics with a concentration in clothing and textiles. It was at WCU that she met her loving husband of nearly 40 years, Robert Edward (“Eddie”) Davis, of Fayetteville, who survives her. After their marriage, they resided in Fayetteville, Raleigh and Atlanta. In 1981, they chose Pinehurst for the home base of Eddie’s role in a self-started surgical sales company, Adler Instrument Inc.
Also surviving is her loving son, Robert Andrew (“Drew”) Davis, a native of Pinehurst, where Cindy, Eddie and Drew had lived since 1981. They were active members of Southern Pines First Baptist Church, where Cindy had served in many capacities over the years, including WMU leader, Decorating Committee chairman, fifth- and sixth-grade Sunday School class teacher, VBS leader and teacher, longtime member of the Agape Class, and member of many and various long standing church committees.
She was not often seen behind the podium but rather serving in the capacity of a group organizer and as an implementer of ideas. Her priorities were her faith, her family, her church, her home and her dear friends, which represented many different generations and many different backgrounds.
She appreciated beauty of creation in human form, in art, in music and in the written word. She loved joy that brought laughter, and she enjoyed soul-bearing tears. She was a hugger, a toucher, and a kisser. She loved party clothes, jewelry with “bling,” shoes (and we’re definitely not talking Birkenstocks) and purses. Cindy was a “girly girl.” Her nails were usually painted red to match her toes, and one rarely caught her without makeup. Although the decision for cremation was made by Cindy, Eddie knew long ago that it was the only option since no one else could apply her makeup the same way Cindy did.
When she was with her dearest friends on one of their special G.O.V. trips (girls on vacation) then it might be a p.j. or bathing suit day from sunup to sundown. No pretensions whatsoever among her buddies.
Cindy was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She will always be remembered for her unfailing courage, her passionate love for people, her sense of humor, and her caring kindness.
She is also survived by her sister and friend, Karen Sloan Perry, who loved her so very much, and her husband, Robert Perry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415-4608; or First Baptist Church Southern Pines, Decorating Committee, 200 E. New York Ave., Southern Pines, N.C.
