Maude Dowd Frye, 89, of Pinehurst, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at her home.
Maude was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Carthage, to Peter and Fodie S. Dowd.
She was a graduate of Carthage High School Class of 1941 and Elon College Class of 1943. After her education, she returned to work for Pinehurst Incorporated for the Tufts family. During World War II, she worked as a medical secretary at Camp Mackall until 1945, when World War II ended. She was married to Mack Alexander Frye Sr. in June 1945. They made their home in Pinehurst and raised their children, Gail and Mark. She became medical office manager for Dr. Francis L. Owens and remained with him for more than 45 years. During this time she formed many life-long relationships with patients of Dr. Owens.
Maude possessed a tireless desire to help others and she lovingly gave of herself and her homemade cooking. Her recipes are treasured, and her cheese cake has not been duplicated. When friends and neighbors suffered illness or loss, Maude showed up with a tray of homemade food. Maude was a woman of uncommon strength and integrity.
She had a clear vision of what she thought was right and never compromised her beliefs. She gave us her loyalty and her moral strength to guide us in the choices we made. She will be remembered for her honesty.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Alexander Frye Sr.; a son, Mack A. Frye Jr; grandson, Keith A. Frye; her sister, Frances D. Baber; brothers, Harold S. Dowd, Henry G. Dowd, Robert P. Dowd and Charles M. Dowd.
She leaves behind a daughter, Z. Gail Frye, of Raleigh; grandchildren Amy (Daniel) Bosworth, of West End; Natalie Bass and Russell Frye, both of Rockingham; great-grandchildren, Brandon Cheek, Savannah Bass and Corey Bosworth; a sister, Betty (Leo) Davis, of Pinehurst; brothers, David (Ann) Dowd and Jimmy (Pearl) Dowd, both of Carthage.
Memorial services will be held Monday, Dec. 17, at noon at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Thomas and the Rev. James Cagle officiating. Following the service, there will be a luncheon to celebrate her life.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care 1500 W. Indiana Ave., Southern Pines, NC 28387.
