Obituary for A. Byron Holderby Jr.

Rear Admiral A. Byron Holderby Jr., CHC, USN, Ret., 77, of Pinehurst, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2012.
Chaplain Holderby was born in Norfolk, Va. He graduated from the College of William & Mary and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and was pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Va. In 1967 he became a Navy chaplain. His duty stations included Japan, Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, Fla., Guantanamo Bay, Okinawa, Wales, Hawaii, the U.S. Naval Academy where he was named an honorary member of the class of 1957, and Washington, D.C. He retired in 2000 as the Navy Chief of Chaplains.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Thiele; his daughters, Barbara Bostian and husband, Michael, of New Bern; Anne Vance and husband, Robert, of Woodbridge, Va.; and six grandchildren, Matthew, Laura, and Erica Bostian, Rachel and Jenny Ryals, and Alex Vance.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines, followed by a reception at Pinewild Country Club. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
