Rear Admiral A. Byron Holderby Jr., CHC, USN, Ret.,

style="text-align: justify;">Rear Admiral A. Byron Holderby Jr., CHC, USN, Ret., 77, of Pinehurst, died on Friday, August 24, 2012. Chaplain Holderby was born in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from the College of William & Mary and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and was pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Roanoke, VA. In 1967 he became a Navy Chaplain. His duty stations included Japan, Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, FL, Guantanamo Bay, Okinawa, Wales, Hawaii, the U.S. Naval Academy where he was named an honorary member of the class of 1957, and Washington, D.C. He retired in 2000 as the Navy Chief of Chaplains.

style="text-align: justify;">He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Thiele; his daughters Barbara Bostian and husband Michael of New Bern, NC; Anne Vance and husband Robert of Woodbridge, VA; and six grandchildren Matthew, Laura, and Erica Bostian; Rachel and Jenny Ryals, and Alex Vance.

style="text-align: justify;">A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Southern Pines, NC, followed by a reception at Pinewild Country Club. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1517 Luther Way, Southern Pines, NC, 28387, or First Health Hospice and Palliative Care at P.O. Box 5889, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
