Mena T. Holloway, 85, of Pinehurst, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at The Village Chapel. Interment will be private.
She was born Dec. 22, 1926, in London, to the late Albert and Mengia Tall. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband of 33 years, Tom Sherry.
Mrs. Holloway retired to Pinehurst in 1982 from Lake Bluff, Ill. She enjoyed a full life with her beloved family and friends. Some of her many passions included being a champion croquet player with the Pinehurst Croquet Club, an avid gardener, an expert at sewing, knitting and cooking. Many fondly knew her as the “cookie lady.”
She derived her greatest pleasure from sharing her talents, especially with people in need.
One of her much loved activities was knitting hats for cancer patients. Her favorite cause was Habitat for Humanity, where she was a longtime volunteer and was instrumental in establishing the Habitat Moore Store.
She is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Walter Holloway; three daughters, Cathy Moore and her husband, Robert, Sylvia Bailey and her husband, Bill, and Monica Riley and her husband, John; stepdaughter Sallie Holloway and her husband, Dimitrios; loving grandchildren Tom and Elisabeth Moore, Rob, Mimy and Lillian Bailey, and Kevin Riley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Habitat for Humanity, 2268 N.C. 5, Aberdeen, NC 28315.
