Dorothea B. Wallrath, 85, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 9, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Boles Funeral Home, in Southern Pines.
Dorothea was born Dec. 17, 1926, to Richard and Charlotte Breuhammer, near Wehlau, East Prussia, Germany.
As a teenager “Dolly” and family were forced to leave their home as World War II disrupted their lives. Eventually ending up in Bremen, Germany she was able to start a new life after the war.
In 1966, her mother decided to move to the U.S. and the family immigrated to join up with Gerda, her sister, who had left Germany as a war bride many years earlier. Once arriving in the U.S., Dolly, husband Hans and son Michael lived in Cary, Star and Los Angeles before settling in Pinehurst in 1976, where Hans and Dolly started their own business.
Dolly enjoyed sewing, horseback riding, traveling and theater, and was passionate about animals. The family always included cats and dogs. At one point, she tried to raise German Dachshunds but could not bring herself to sell the puppies, so the family grew even larger. Later in life, Hans and Dolly discovered their love for ballroom dancing, where they made lots of new friends.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Hans-Joachim Wallrath; son Michael Alexander and wife, Jean, of Wilmington; granddaughters Melanie Alexander, of West End, Kelly A. Vaughan and husband, Charles, of Raleigh; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Alfred; and sister Gerda B. Pleasants.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Moore Humane Society at moore humane.org.
