Donald M. Schultz, of Whispering Pines, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Boles Funeral Home, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating.
Born July 22, 1929, in Rockford, Ill., he lived in Prairie du Chien, Wis., at an early age. He was an outstanding athlete in Prairie du Chien and during his entire life.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he signed on with general manager Branch Richey as a pitcher to play professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched a no-hitter in 1954 against the Durham Bulls in Burlington.
Burlington then became home, and he attended Elon College while working at Plaza Pontiac, where he quickly advanced from successful salesman to owner. After selling that dealership and moving to Graham, he became an N.C. magistrate for Alamance County for 12 years until retiring in 1991.
He remained interested and knowledgeable in baseball, especially the Cincinnati Reds, and in football as a devout NFL Green Bay Packers fan. The Burlington YMCA was very important to him for his running and conditioning, and he remained dedicated.
Don and Janet built their home in Whispering Pines. He loved working and maintaining a nice yard. Many trips were made to Wisconsin and Ohio, in addition to Rockford, Ill., to care for his aunt, and to Draper Valley for golfing together.
In 2000 he became a “snowbird,” traveling to a condo in Lehigh Acres, Fla., where he enjoyed life with his wife, cooking, relaxing and playing golf at Copperhead.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Schultz, of the home; son, Don M. Schultz Jr., of Burlington; and niece, Stacey Taylor, of Dublin, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Jack Schultz.
Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 127, 400 Flemington Drive, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450; or FirstHealth of the Carolinas Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374; or charity of donor’s choice.
