Sue graduated from Aberdeen High School and attended Rabun Gap College in Georgia; she graduated from Flora McDonald in 1948. She returned home to begin a long and distinguished teaching career, beginning in Lemon Springs, at Greenwood High School. In 1957, Sue returned to her beloved Aberdeen High School, to teach English, French and Latin. She taught at AHS until its closing in 1969. She returned to teaching in 1971, at Samarkand Manor, where she taught until her retirement in 1986.
Teaching English was a passion, and her love of all things artistic and natural were underlined in her many community activities. A member of Walter Hines Page Book Club (1985-2011) and Cardinal Book Club (1952-2011), she served both organizations as an officer. She was a member of the Arts Council of Moore County board and served as an officer and Grass Roots Grant Committee chair, the latter for more than 10 years. She was an active volunteer with the Moore County Chapter of the North Carolina Symphony, and a member of AAUW. Her continued work with the AHS Reunion Committee was a testament to her devotion to AHS and her students.
A life-long member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Sue directed weddings from 1952-2008. She produced the church newsletter and edited other church publications for almost 20 years, and was a frequent volunteer in the church office.
