Barbara Price Maples, 66, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Boles Funeral Home Chapel, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Carl Matthews and Rev. David Pratt officiating. The family received friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
Barbara had an active lifelong involvement with the Girl Scouts and the Malcolm Blue Junior Historians, and a strong passion and expertise in all aspects of North Carolina history.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Phillip L. Richardson III.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Maples; her daughter, Marsha Richardson and husband Phillip, of Aberdeen; her granddaughter, Sarah Presley; and great grandchildren, Madison and Caleb Presley, and Ashlynn Richardson.

Lee Wesley Sheffield, 84, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Randolph Hospital.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with Bishop Dale Cox and Bishop Gary Cecil officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 p..m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.
A native of Moore County, Mr. Sheffield was born Oct. 6, 1928. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wesley Sheffield and Claudia Lola Cashwell Sheffield; his stepfather, Elden L. McLeod; and his son, Jimmy Wade Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Sarah Louise Saunders Sheffield, of 65 years as of Nov. 8; four sons, Lee Harris Sheffield and wife, Marsha (Elaine) Williams Sheffield, of Reidsville, David Lee Sheffield and wife, Sheila Daniels Sheffield, and Bill Sheffield, all of Asheboro, and Christopher Todd Sheffield, of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren, Christopher Lee Sheffield and wife, Lisa Kay Meador Sheffield, Daniel Wayne Sheffield and wife, Inga Rose Medley Sheffield, Summer Elaine Howard and husband, Neil Anthony Howard, all of Reidsville, Sonia Louise Sheffield, of Greensboro, and Dulcinea Jennie Sheffield Sweeney and husband, Donald Gary Sweeney, of Asheboro; six great-grandchildren, Kaylee Danielle Sheffield, Ashlynn Carroll Sheffield, Seth Nicholas Sheffield, Emilyrose Carroll Sheffield, all of Reidsville, and Aaron Lee Sheffield and Barrett Gary Sweeney, both of Asheboro.
The family would like to thank the Randolph Hospital ICU nurses, RN Michelle and RN Gina for their care for Mr. Sheffield.

Joel Layton Lewis, 71years old, entered the arms of Jesus on Nov. 13, 2012. Brother Joel graduated Fairmont High School in 1959 and worked 23 years at J.P. Stevens before retiring in 1989. He attended Union Chapel Holiness Methodist Church for several years while he was able. He is preceeded in death by his father Layton Lewis, his mother Nora Lee Jordan, step-father Claude Jordan; sisters: Erlene Lewis and Helen Lockey and brothers: Eugene Lewis and James Lewis.

He is survived by his wife Betty Jo Lewis of the home; his only child Vivian McNeill and son-in-law, N.J.McNeill, Jr., and two granddaughters Kennedy Grace McNeill and Madison Hope McNeill all of Shannon; four brothers: Wilton G. (“W.G.”) Lewis of Red Springs, Jimmy Lewis, Milton Lewis and Kenny Lewis all of Shannon; and one sister: Geraldine Starling of Fayetteville. He will be forever remembered by a host of extended family members, fellow church members and many special friends.

His “Celebrations of Life” Ceremony will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Red Springs, NC on Nov. 17, 2012 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Rev. Willie Scott, Rev. Dewayne Lowery and Rev. Hedrick Jones, officiating. A private funeral service and interment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be at other times at his home or his daughters home, both in Shannon, NC.

George Bartels Truax, 78, of Sanford, passed away Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, with his family by his side, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Sanford.
Services will be held privately by the family at a later date.
He was born July 27, 1934, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late Marshall Mann Truax and Kathleen Bartels Truax. He was known as coach Truax to many young people in Clinton, because of his active involvement coaching little league baseball, football and girls’ softball. He was a board member of the Sampson County Community Theater.
Mr. Truax retired from Hamilton-Beach after 48 years of service. He was a former troop leader for Girl Scouts of America. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. His children will cherish his memory and remember the value of work and the ethics that he instilled in each one of them as they grew up. He will be remembered as a good guy with a great sense of humor.
He is survived by four daughters, Debi Ann Apathy and husband, Michael, of Winston-Salem, Gina Marie Flower, of Girard, Pa., Patricia Osterhaus and husband, Donald, of Sanford, and Cathy Yeates and husband, Joe, of South Jordan, Utah; a son, Roy Edward Truax and wife, Theresa McCarthy, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, Emma, Lily, Bella, Arden, Michael, Joey, Kimberly, Spock Shaffer, Nathan, George, Michael, Elliott, Roy, Kaleigh, and Kathleen; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was also survived by two brothers, Jon Truax and wife, Sally, of Loudonville, Ohio, and Mike Truax and wife, Barbara, of Mansfield, Ohio; and his beloved buddy, Scrappy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kelley Truax; a son, Garland Marshall Truax; and a sister, Dawna Loch.

Elizabeth “Betty” M. Rietschel, 91, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at The Coventry, in Southern Pines.
Interment and graveside services will be in Phillips, Maine, in the spring of 2013.
She was born in Phillips, Maine, the daughter of the late Truman E. Masterman and Martha Connell Masterman. She was a graduate of Phillips High School and the Northeastern School of Business.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Carl Rietschel; a daughter, Janet Martha Horst, of Richmond, Va.; and a son, John Masterman Rietschel, of West River, Maryland.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas Tully Potter; loving daughter of the late Lewis Dale Jennings and Lois Wealthy Nelson; devoted mother of Thomas C. Potter and his wife Carolyn P. Potter, Susan L. Potter, Sarah A. Potter and the late Marsha A. Potter; loving grandmother of Michelle Lynn Chrisakis, Kimberly Ann Potter, Melaine Amanda Stutzman and Michele Jennifer Fielder; dear great grandmother of Mia Jane Chrisakis, David J. Fielder, April Crosby, John David Stutzman, IV and Ellie Carolyn Stutzman; cherished great great grandmother of Madelyn Crosby.
Clara was faithful to her church, enjoyed mentoring children and loved her family dearly.

Michael G. Connelly, 80, of Southern Pines, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012, with his family by his side. Mr. Connelly was born in Buffalo, New York in 1932 to William M. Connelly and Dolores Zimmermann; the eldest of four children.

He graduated from Saint Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, Kenmore, New York, and from Canisius College, Buffalo, New York, with a Bachelor Of Science Degree.

Following college, Mike served in Korea for two years in the U.S. Army, on the front line rising to Infantry Company Commander, and Honorably Discharged holding the rank of Captain.

Following his Honorable Discharge, he was employed by American Airlines in their New York City headquarters beginning in their Management Candidate Program ultimately serving as Director of Fuel Purchasing.

He then joined Conover Mast Publishing holding the position of New York City District Manager, followed by appointment as Director of Sales and Marketing for Medical Communications, Inc. also in New York City.

Upon leaving New York City, Mike became Vice President at Computer Search, Inc. Amherst, New York, and ended his business career as Midwest Regional Manager for McGraw-Hill Publications based in Chicago. During this time he was active in the Business Press Advertisers Association, President of the Industrial Advertising Sales Club of Cleveland, Ohio, as well as President of the Industrial Advertising Sales Club of Chicago.

He held memberships in the Press Clubs of Cleveland, New York City, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. He also chaired the Membership Committee of The Royal Ridge Field Club of Pittsburgh, served as President of Regent Park Home Owners Association, Arlington Heights, Illinois and Vice-President of the Ancient Tree Home Owners Association, Northbrook, Illinois, and served as President of the Parent’s Association Ohio Beta Chapter Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

He and his Wife, Barbara, retired to Pinehurst in 1992 and belonged to the Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, as well as to the Golf and Country Club of Longleaf in Southern Pines, and most recently resided at Penick Village in Southern Pines.

During his lifetime he was active in numerous civic and political organizations including the Membership Committee of The Moore County Republican Men’s Club and his hobbies included golf, tennis, and photography.

He is survived by his wife of 33 Years, Barbara of Southern Pines and eight children: Cari Fultz, Megan (John) Swanson and Tim (Linda) Connelly, all of Hamburg, New York; Ann (John) Mertz of Libertyville, Illinois; Patrick (Michelle) Connelly of East Haddam, Connecticut; William (Jennifer) Connelly of Marvin, North Carolina; Jan and Bill Bright of Waukesha, Wisconsin and Barbara and Charles Rigdon of Huntington Beach, California,  and 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his sister Ann (Fred) Scherer of Kenmore, New York, brother, Kevin (Judy) Connelly of Pinehurst and brother-in-law Frank Downing of Orchard Park, New York. He was predeceased by both parents and sister, Dolores (Frank) Downing of Orchard Park, New York.

A Memorial Service in his honor will be held at The Village Chapel of Pinehurst at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Born on June 14, 1923 in Yakdin County to the late Jess and Nina Prim.

Mrs. Williams is predeceased by her three brothers, Carl, Wayne and Sam Prim.

She is survived by her four sons, Howard E., Jerry P. (Dixie), Kenneth D. all of Carthage and Larry W. of Olive Branch, Mississippi; one daughter, Judy M. Mallow of Carthage; three sisters, Polly Smith and Vivian Evans both of Carthage and Velma McGloughon of Greensboro; Also survived by 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Born on September 20, 1929 in Queens Co., New York to the late William and Lydeen Morrison.  William was a fourth degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Phillip David “Dave” Engle, 79, of Southern Pines, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
He was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Oklahoma City, to the late Allen David Engle and Opal Bell Engle.
Dave graduated from the University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M, later joining the U.S. Army. He was a Vietnam veteran. Among his last assignments were district engineer in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, and commander of the 20th Engineer Brigade Airborne. He retired as colonel from Fort Bragg.
Mr. Engle is survived by his wife of 37 years, JoEtta Engle; a brother Richard Engle; his two daughters, Cathy Engle Stout and Lisa Engle Rosa; his son George Wayne Thomas; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by a brother, Bill Engle.

Edward “Ed” E. Hults, 84, of Southern Pines, Naperville, Ill., and a part-time resident of Huntingdon, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 21, 2012, in Pinehurst. His health declined following spinal surgery Aug. 21.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dale and the Rev. Christy Dowdy officiating. Interment will be in the Naperville Cemetery, Naperville, Ill. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Born Sept. 10, 1928, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Mildred (Burgard) Hults. He was first married to the former Barbara Ann Searle, Nov. 16, 1957, in LaGrange, Ill. She preceded him in death April 5, 2003. He was later united in marriage to Doris J. Comerford on Dec. 10, 2005, at the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon. His wife survives.
Mr. Hults is also survived by his children, Richard C. Hults and his wife, Karen, of Wesley Chapel, and Cheryl Ann Coffman, of Glen Burnie, Md.; his stepchildren, John R. Comerford and David M. Comerford and his wife, Beth, all of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jean E. Corbin, of Huntingdon; two grandchildren, Courtney Hults and Justin Hults; 10 stepgrandchildren, Sean and Erin Comerford and Zachary, Valarie, Lucas, Lexis, Iesha, Daisha, Wyatt and Giovanni Corbin; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Zayden Davis and Emma Corbin.
A stillborn daughter, Carol Ann Hults, preceded him in death.
Mr. Hults was a member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Naperville, and attended the Stone Church of the Brethren while in Huntingdon. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the occupation army on Kyushu Island, Japan. Mr. Hults later joined the Army Reserves and was called back to serve in the Korean War in 1950. He served as an instructor at Fort Ord, Calif.
Mr. Hults volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and Little League Baseball coach.
He was a 1946 graduate of Naperville High School, where he lettered in football and track, and a 1950 graduate of Bryant and Stratton College, Chicago. He also attended IBM training classes. Mr. Hults retired from employment at International Harvester, now known as Navistar, as an information systems manager.
He enjoyed reading, especially about the history of the Civil War and World War II. Mr. Hults also enjoyed traveling, visiting national historical sites, baseball, watching his grandchildren’s baseball games and visiting his family and friends. He was an Illinois football fan and a fan of the Chicago Cubs.

Michael G. Connelly, 80, of Southern Pines, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, with his family by his side.
A memorial service in his honor will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst.

Larry “Bud” Atkins Edmonds, 70, of Broadway, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Carthage First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Rick Martindale. Military honors were presented in the church during the service. The family received friends after the service in the Family Life Center. The family also received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home, in Carthage.
He was a son of the late Jonah and Cleo Atkins Edmonds, of Pinehurst. A 1960 graduate of Pinehurst High School, he joined the U.S. Army in June 1960. He was honorably discharged and transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1963.
Coming back to North Carolina, he worked for 22 years at Twin-City Laundry, and then worked for 20 years as a tool salesman at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Sanford until his retirement in 2009.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ellis Edmonds. He is survived by two sons, Lawrence “Lee” Edmonds and wife, Denise, of Carthage, and Donald Eddie Edmonds and wife, Vickie, of Cameron; three grandchildren, Justin Edmonds, of Carthage, Ryan Edmonds, of Cameron, and April Renee Hockaday and husband, Brent, of Broadway; great-grandson, Grant Hockaday, of Broadway; three stepchildren, Sandy Hyatt and Charlie Ellis, of Maryville, Tenn., and Tommy Ellis, of Gaffney, S.C.; three sisters, Joyce Childress, of Durham, Glenda Williams, of Southern Pines, and Betsy Baugess of Burlington; and a brother, Donald Edmonds, of Mount Airy.

Thelma Fields Warner Smith, 88, formerly of Aberdeen, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Michael Harper. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late William M. and Della Fields Warner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hinton Smith; a sister, Hazel W. Bryant; and three brothers, Harold Warner, Dewitt Warner and Billy Warner.
She is survived by three sisters, Margaret W. Thomas, of Sanford; Virginia W. Phillips, of Glendon, and Eva W. Luther, of Bear Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
