Obituary for Virginia Ann Merrill
Virginia Ann Merrill, 92, of Pinehurst, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Fox Hollow retirement community.
No services are planned at this time.
She was born April 11, 1920, in South Portland, Maine, to Lucille and Ralph Henry. She was fortunate to have been married twice to men she loved very much.
Her first marriage to Joseph M. Hussey lasted from 1950 to 1970, when he died of Hodgkin’s disease. While married to Joe she raised three children, Brian Joseph Hussey, Patricia Ann Hussey, who died at age 6, and Sharon Lucille Hussey.
Virginia and Joe spent their winters in Pinehurst and their summers in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where they ran the Cedars Inn for many years together. When Joe died, Virginia continued to run the Cedars for an additional eight years by herself.
At the age of 70, Virginia married Malcolm H. Merrill, of Ogunquit, Maine, who was also widowed from his first marriage. Unfortunately their time together was short, as Malcolm died suddenly of a brain tumor.
During her years in Pinehurst she worked as a salesperson for Razooks, as a bookkeeper for Bob Barrett at the Pine Crest Inn, and in sales for Four Seasons Travel.
She is survived by her children Brian and wife, Robin, of Charlotte, and Sharon Roach and her two children, Joseph Michael and Bradley Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association to help fight the terrible disease she battled at the end of her life.
