James Joseph Geagan, 81, of Southern Pines, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
A vigil for the deceased will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Boles Funeral Home. in Southern Pines. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Msgr. Jeffrey A. Ingham officiating. Rite of committal will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines.
Mr. Geagan was born July 28, 1931, in Corona, N.Y., to the late Joseph Francis Geagan and Margaret (Brennan) Geagan. He was raised in Long Island and graduated from Cathedral College in Brooklyn in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in the Counter Intelligence Corps, later working for nine years in the CIA in Europe and America.
After leaving the CIA, Mr. Geagan spent the rest of his career in the wholesale building material industry in Michigan, Indiana and Iowa. For more than 20 years Mr. Geagan was active as a performer in community theater productions in Michigan, Iowa and Fayetteville.
After retirement in 1996, Mr. Geagan moved to Southern Pines, where he continued to enjoy his 60-year passion of playing golf. He was the 1995 Iowa State 60 and over Senior Golf Champion. He volunteered locally building homes for the Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Joseph Geagan and wife, Donya, of Philadelphia, and Thomas Charles Geagan, of Chicago; two daughters, Laura Shea Geagan, of San Francisco, and Helen Kathryn Follett and husband, Doug, of Indianapolis; one brother, Thomas Francis Geagan, of New York; a sister, Sister Helen Ann Geagan, of New York; a sister-in-law, Ann Geagan of Florida; and seven grandchildren
Mr. Geegan was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Francis Geagan.
